Here we go! With a true Canadian winter behind us, we are all looking forward to warmer weather and longer days. Now that daylight savings has begun it’s starting to feel like spring!
This years’ Canada Blooms event in Toronto was a warm welcome and has certainly helped start the season off with the theme “Let’s Play!” Landscape Ontario is working hard promoting the outdoors especially when it comes to our children and the need for them to get outdoors and spend time exploring, being creative and getting fresh air! The show promoted ideas and play areas that were full of kids enjoying the basket ball courts, playing in sandboxes and tree houses. Creating special places in the landscape for our children to enjoy and experience the outdoors is so important for their development. Landscape Ontario’s message is a great one and will continue to encourage our thoughts and planning for creative spaces that will produce years of outdoor enjoyment.
New Trends in the Landscape
Modern backyard design is the latest trend in the landscape with straight lines and clean mass plantings. Utilizing accent furnishings, pillows, colourful décor, patio torches and candles you will add style and class through your own personal touches.
One of the perfect plantings for modern mass garden accents is the use of grasses. These perennial plantings are easy to care for, consistent performers, and require little to no watering. Here are a few of the great varieties that we suggest in our planning. They offer tremendous texture, colour and accent to the architectural lines of design.
Fountain Grass ‘Pennisetum alopecuroides’
Evergold Variegated Japanese Sedge Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’
